Ghibli Announces Details on R2 Ponyo Blu-Ray

...And it appears that the US Disney dub will appear on the Region-2 Ponyo Blu-Ray after all.  You can see details on all the Ponyo home versions in Japan here.

Ponyo will appear on 2-disc Blu-Ray, and a 3-disc box set that includes the making-of documentary.  That looks very nice, and I would really, really hope that we could get that doc on our US release.

According to GhibliWiki, here are the features on the Japanese Ponyo BD.  The Disney dub appears on the second disc:

North American edition (English Dub, Japanese Sub)

NTV TV spots: 2 versions

Credit-less ending: 5 minutes

Hmm. I wonder if, like the previous Ghibli BRs, it will be region free? BR doesn't use the same regions as DVD, and you guys will be alright, as Japan and the US share the same region...not so lucky for us euros though. We will of course be able to watch the DVD though.

Oh it's all got so confusing now...

That's simply loaded with features!

Do you think that the video will be lower quality / bitrate since the second disc will include more data than the first disc?

I have seen this happen all the time on DVD.

@Dave: I don't expect the picture quality on Disc 2 to suffer. Of if this is so, the difference won't be as notable as on DVD.

@tim maughan: It's true that many BD's around the world are region-free, which is great. There are only 3 global regions for BD, with Japan and the Americas sharing R1.

It's not hard to get around region lockout codes. Most players include easter egg codes for overriding the codes. And PC/Mac owners can download a software program like DVD Region-Free. It's very easy to get around in 2009.

I'm already considering on upgrading to a new MoBo and processor and then getting a Blu-Ray drive for the heck of it, at least the US is in the same region as Japan this time around.

You can play the Japanese Ponyo Blu-ray on any American BD player without any modification.

North America and Japan are Region A. Blu-ray doesn't have number regions. It has Region A, B, and C.

Of course you've heard it a million times, but I recommend buying a PS3 if you are getting a blu-ray player. It is now slimmer, redesigned, and cheaper.

I don't own a DS, but I may borrow one from a friend when this eventually gets released here.

I actually own a DS and of course I'll be getting that game. Good enough DS isn't region locked.

Thanks for the news. Now I really can't wait till December. I'll be getting BluRay, of course. Great that they loaded so many extras!
